Dr Terence Alexander qualified with a Bachelor of Dental Science from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1987 and received the PROSSA prize for clinical fixed prosthodontics and the Lester Brown award in Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery. After serving 2 years in the military as a Lieutenant, he was selected and completed a Fellowship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in South Africa in 1995. In 1997 he graduated with a Master’s degree in Oral Maxillofacial Surgery from the University of the Witwatersrand. He was awarded the Medal of the South African Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons for the most outstanding candidate in the final fellowship examination. His training and experience in South Africa has offered him extensive exposure to the treatment of severe maxillofacial injuries, gunshot injuries to the facial region, advanced oral pathology, reconstructive surgery, oral surgery, dental implantology and orthognathic surgery.
Dr Alexander entered private practice in 1995, with a special interest in orthognathic surgery. He also joined the staff in the division of Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery in 1995 as a part time consultant in Orthognathic surgery, becoming head of the Orthognathic Surgery unit at the Johannesburg Hospital in 2000 until his immigration to Australia, with his wife and three sons, in 2008. During this period, he kept his academic ties as an examiner for the College of Medicine of South Africa, was part of the postgraduate selection committee and lectured to both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
His training has been strongly influenced by his peers and attendance at local and international meetings, particularly in the field of orthognathic surgery. He enjoys interacting and sharing his passion for life changing orthognathic surgery with undergraduate and postgraduate colleagues alike. He has presented lectures to students at the University of Queensland and at Griffith University, on orthognathic surgery, preprosthetic surgery, salivary gland conditions, oral surgery and dental implantology.
After obtaining registration as an Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon in Australia, Terence has worked in private practice in Brisbane since 2010. He also has an appointment as a senior lecturer and course coordinator in the Discipline of Oral Surgery, School of Dentistry, at the University of Queensland, where he continues to encourage and tutor young students starting their professional careers.
